Abstract

1,241,710. Gripping tongs. F. H. HATEBUR A.G. 13 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 59491/68. Heading B8H. A pair of workpiece tongs 2, 3 mounted on a carriage 6 for moving workpieces 17, comprises a tension spring 15 biasing the two tongs together and the tong 2 being formed by two pivoted parts 19, 20, the lower part 20 being pivoted relative to the upper part 19 against the resistance of a leaf spring 25 thereon, upon the tongs engaging an obstruction during transporting. The top of the lower part 20 of tong 2 is formed with two angularly displaced flat surfaces 23, 24, the surface 24 normally engaging the spring 25 but upon deflection of the part 20, the surface 23 is rotated towards the spring against the resistance thereof as the spring is deflected into a recess 26 in the upper part 19. The obstruction also causes the tong 3 to rotate against the bias of the spring 15, the driving machine being switched off and braked at a predetermined angle of rotation of the tongs. Toothed segments 13, 14, on the tongs interengage and transmit equal and opposite rotation therebetween which during transporting is the tong closing force of the spring 15. At the end of transportation, the shaft 4 of the tong 2 is rotated through a crank and cam mechanism to open the tongs against the resistance of the spring 15.
