Abstract

1,241,559. Magnetic structures. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 25 Sept., 1968 [4 Jan., 1968], No. 548/68. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C7] A wire or other solid conductor surface is coated with ferrite by forming a deposit of powdered ferrite thereon, subjecting the deposit to substantially uniform external pressure, and then heat treating the deposit to render it coherent. The deposit may be formed by painting or spraying the conductor with a slurry of the ferrite on a paint-type carrier, or by electrophoretically depositing such a slurry. Pressure may be exerted on the deposit by surrounding it with pressurized fluid. When the fluid is a liquid, e.g. oil, it is preferred to enclose the coated conductor in a deformable plastic mould which is then surrounded by the pressurized fluid. When the ferrite deposit is 0À5- 10 mils thick on a wire 1-100 mils in diameter, a suitable pressure is 0À5-1 ton per sq. inch maintained for up to 3 minutes. The pressure forces the particles of the deposit together and towards the conductor surface and allows the production of ferrite coatings having densities up to 60% of the theoretical maximum density.
