1,241,385. Aromatic polybenzimidazoles. CELANESE CORP. 9 July, 1969, No. 34609/69. Heading C3R. Aromatic polybenzimidazoles are obtained by heating monomers or monomer mixtures at temperatures above 200‹ C. under oxygen-free conditions at atmospheric or higher pressures while continuously passing nitrogen through the reaction zone at a rate of from 1% to 200% of the volume of the reaction zone per minute. The reaction may be carried out in one stage or in two stages, the product from the first stage being powdered before being heated in the second stage. In an example, poly-2,2<SP>1</SP>-(mphenylene) - 5,5<SP>1</SP> - bibenzimidazole is prepared from 3,3<SP>1</SP> - diaminobenzidine and diphenylisophthalate. Other starting materials and products are mentioned.
