Abstract
1,241,223. Laminated packaging material. STANDARD PACKAGING CORP. 9 July, 1968 [11 July, 1967; 23 May, 1968], No. 32649/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] A sheet for packaging (see Division B8) comprises an intimate laminate of a supporting film layer, a rupturable film layer and a pressuresensitive layer between the two film layers, the bond formed between the two film layers having a strength greater than that required to tear the rupturable film. A cover 14 for the package comprises the supporting film layer of polyethylene terephthalate resin, nylon, polypropylene or regenerated cellulose 15 and polyethylene 16 having a gas barrier layer of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile between them (not shown). The lower surface of the layer 15 is subjected to a corona or electrostatic discharge treatment to increase its wettability and is then coated with a water-based primer of polyethylene imine (not shown). A thin polyethylene film is then applied to the primed surface by a melt extrusion process and a further preformed polyethylene layer is then applied to the extruded layer whilst still molten. The exposed surface of this polyethylene layer 16 also has its wettability increased and the pressure sensitive adhesive layer 17 is then applied. The rupturable layer of polyethylene 18 is applied to the adhesive layer after the polyethylene has had its wettability increased. Polyvinyl chloride may be used for the rupturable layer. A base member 10 for the package which is finally adhered or heat sealed to the cover member at 19 comprises a gas barrier layer (not shown) between a layer of polyvinyl chloride 11 and polyethylene 12. In another form the base member comprises a lower layer of nylon primed with a coating of dibutyl tin dilaurate catalysed prepolymer, a gas barrier layer, a further primer coating and a final upper layer of polyethylene treated to increase its wettability. Adhesive laminated structures can be used instead of extrusion laminates. The surfaces of the cover and base to be sealed together may be made of styrenes, vinyls, propylenes or vinylchloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers.
