Abstract

1,240,743. Linear polyesters. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 18 Nov., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 56293/69. Heading C3R. A polyester of low ether group content is prepared by reacting 1 mole of a free dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid) with 1.05 to 1.7 moles of a glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol) in the presence of a certain catalyst and optionally in the presence of an organo-phosphorus compound in a molten low molecular weight polyester, as solvent, which may or may not be derived from the same acid and glycol as are being polycondensed, the reaction preferably being carried out at 10-1000 p.s.i.g. The catalyst is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a magnesium carboxylate, or silicate, or an alkaline earth metal or magnesium alkoxide. The organo-phosphorus compounds may be triphenyl phosphite, triethylene diphosphite, diphenyl phenyl phosphonite, tricresyl phosphate and diphenyl phenyl phosphonate.
