Abstract

1,240,742. Dyeing polyamides. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 5 Nov., 1969 [7 Nov., 1968], No. 54343/69. Heading D1B. Dyed polyamides e.g. poly #-caproamide and polyhexamethylene adipamide are rendered more resistant to ozone fading by incorporating into the polyamide (a) an ethylene oxy-substituted tertiary amine of the formulae: wherein R is an alkyl or aralkyl radical containing 4 to 25 carbon atoms and x, y and z are integers so that in compounds of the first formula above x+y is not more than 10 and in the second formula x+y+z is not more than 10 and (b) a hindered phenol. The tertiary amine is preferably N, N-di-(2-hydroxymethyl) octadecylamine or N, N, N'-tri-(2- hydroxyethyl)-N'-octadecyl-1, 3-propylene diamine and the hindered phenols are 4, 4'- butyldene bis-(6-butyl-m-cresol), p-nonylphenol, 1, 3, 5-trimethyl-2, 4, 6-tris-(3, 5-dibutyl-4- hydroxybenzyl)-benzene or 6-butyl-m-cresol. The compounds (a) and (b) may be added together or separately during the polyamide polymerisation, coated onto nylon chips before spinning or injected into the nylon melt during spinning. The tertiary amine may also be applied from an aqueous bath e.g. the dyebath and amounts of 0.1% to 5% based on the weight of polyamide of each component may be used.
