Abstract

1,240,293. Cleaning and developing xerographic surfaces. EASTMAN KODAK CO. July 12, 1968 [July 17, 1967], No.33313/68. Heading G2H. A xerographic process includes forming a latent electrostatic image on a surface by applying a sensitizing charge of a first polarity, imagewise exposing the surface, applying toner charged with a second polarity by brushing the surface after exposure in an electric field which urges residual toner having a charge of the first polarity away from background areas and image area and then brushing the surface in the presence of a second electrical field which urges toner, charged with the second polarity, toward the image areas and away from the background areas. In one embodiment, a surface 7, Fig. 1B, carrying a negatively charged image 2 is brushed with a brush 6 connected to a voltage source 8 which produces a field which urges positively charged toner towards the image and background areas while negatively charged toner is urged away from the surface 7. The surface 7 is then brushed with a brush 5 connected to a potential source 10 of,the same polarity but less magnitude than the charge image. In another embodiment, Fig. 2C (not shown) the charged surface (24) of a photo-conductive layer is brushed by a grounded magnetic brush (25) and then by a second magnetic brush (26) connected to a potential source (27) which urges toner from background areas. The process may be applied to a xerographic printer, Fig. 3, including a transparent drum 30 coated with a photo-conductive layer 32 exposed internally by a projector 34 to form a latent image brushed with first and second brushes 35, 36. A brush 40 cleans the inside of the drum after exposure by a lamp 41.
