Abstract

1,239,983. Metanilic acid. CONSTRUCTORS JOHN BROWN Ltd. 7 Oct., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 47406/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] m - Nitrobenzene sulphonic acid is reduced in aqueous sulphonic acid solution to metanilic acid in an electrochemical process in which at least one of the electrodes comprises a mass of discrete particles of size up to 2000 Á supported on a fluid-permeable support in which a fluid comprising the electrolyte and/or reactants is caused to flow upwards through the particles the amount of movement being limited by a particle-impermeable barrier above the particle bed. In an example the discrete particles are of copper but they may be of another metal or of a semi-conductor such as graphite or comcomprise a core of non-conducting material coated with a conductor. The rate of electrolyte flow may be "pulsed" so that for a period the particles are stationary. - Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,194,181.
