A ready-to-eat food product is prepared by subjecting wheat-kernels to a cutting operation to reduce their size and expose the endosperm, mixing the cut kernels with water, cooking to gelatinise the starch and form a dough having discrete particles of bran therein, forming the dough into pieces of the desired size and shape, drying the pieces to reduce the moisture content and puffing and expanding the dried pieces by subjecting them to intense heat. Ground rice kernels, a flavouring ingredient, or a colouring agent may be incorporated in the mixture prior to cooking. In the examples, cut wheat, ground rice, water, salt, soda and malt syrup are mixed and cooked under pressure, the resultant dough being formed into shapes (i.e. sheets or pellets) the shapes then being expanded and puffed by deep frying.
