Solid supply to liquid; feed-openings for solids regulated by gas holders. - In a generator for supplying acetylene to the engines of motorvehicles or motor-boats, the carbide is fed by a device controlled by the volume of the gas already produced and driven by a servomotor or by the engine being supplied. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the carbide is fed from a hopper a to a generator c by a hollow member b<2> reciprocated by a pawl k actuated by a servomotor. The gas produced passes to a gasometer d<2> provided with a rod e which lifts the pawl k when the gasometer rises and thus stops the carbide feed; the rise of the gasometer also lifts a valve d<5> from the exit pipe d' through which the gas passes to a water separator e and thence to the engine. In a modification, the carbide is fed by a solid piston reciprocated from the engine through a clutch, the pawl of which is disengaged by an electro-magnet when the circuit thereto is completed by the rise of the gasometer. In a further modification, the reciprocating member is held in engagement with the feed-operating mechanism by a weight, the weight being lifted and the reciprocating-member disengaged when the gasometer rises.
