Abstract
1,239,416. Temperature responsive actuating element. D.J. GOLDSMITH AND D.F. PRATT [trading as PRATT & GOLDSMITH CO. Aug. 26, 1968, No.40623/68. Heading G1D. [Also in Division F2] A thermostatic mixing valve comprises a housing 1 with a hot inlet 2, a cold inlet 3 and an outlet 4 the ratio of quantities of fluid flowing from the inlet ports to the outlet ports being controlled as a function of temperature by element comprising a bi-metallic member 11 in the form of a coiled coil i.e. a bi-metallic strip bent into the form of a helix, this helix then being formed into a larger helix. A hollow control member 5 is disposed within the housing 1 and this has a larger diameter portion 6 at one end with hot mixing ports 7 and cold mixing ports 8 separated by a barrier 9 in the portion 6. One end of the bi-metallic member 11 is secured to a temperature control member 14 and the other end controls the position of an annular valve member 10 sliding on the larger diameter portion 6 of the member 5, the bi-metallic member 11 surrounding the member 5. The axial position of the valve member 10 controls the relative proportions of fluid passing through the hot and cold mixing ports 7, 8. The temperature control member 14 is adjustable axially by means of a manually rotatable member 20 and co-operating multi-stat quick action screw threads on the members 14, 20. The member 20 is rotated inside the housing 1 by a control knob 21 on a drive member 23, co-operating teeth 25, 26 being provided between the members 23, 20. In the position shown in the figure the hot inlet 2 is closed by a valve member 31 engaging.on O-ring seat 32 and the cold inlet is closed similarly by a valve member 18 engaging a seat 17. A control member 19 with a knob 22 having screw threads engaging with threads on the member 20 holds the valve members 31, 18 closed against their respective seats against the action of springs 15, 33 and when the knob 22 is rotated to open these valve members, the member 5 being held in equilibrium between these two springs which are of equal strength. Adjustment is provided by an adjustor 16. Fluid for the cold mixing ports 8 flows from the inlet 3 through the hollow member 5.
