Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A roll support device includes a pad of elastomeric material 3 to support a roll 1 along a length substantially equal to the strip 6 width. The material is rubber and has a shell 2 of synthetic resin reinforced with textile fibres. The pad is supported at its ends by reinforced synthetic resin pieces (5), Fig. 1 (not shown). A pair of devices may be used to support the back-up rollers (17), (18), Fig. 6 (not shown). An alternative form of roll support device comprises an elastomeric pad 21 and a shaped block 19 of copper or copper alloy. The block has a silver bearing surface 20 with recesses 29. Cooling ducts 26 are provided in the block to freeze water lubricant in the recesses. Alternatively the bearing surface is lubricated with water and soluble oil or oils on a lead base.
