1,238,298. Digital transmission systems; telephone exchanges. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 27 Nov., 1968 [30 Nov., 1967], No. 54585/67. Headings H4K and H4P. Messages, such as the initial seven digits dialled by a subscriber in setting up a connection over toll networks, are sent as a number of words together with an indication of the number or words in the message. The messages comprise a leading signal unit, characterized by its initial bit being a 1, and a number of subsequent, signal units characterized by their first bits being 0. The second, third and fourth bits of a subsequent signal unit indicate the number of signal units in the message: such an indication may also be included in the leading signal unit. Messages comprised of a number of words may be broken into by special messages comprised by a single signal unit. A sender retransmits an entire message if no acknowledgement is received. A receiver rejects a signal unit if it is separated from the preceding leading signal unit by two faulty subsequent signal units.
