Abstract

1,238,029. Photo-electric arrangements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct.25, 1968 [Oct.26, 1967], No.48773/67. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions G2 and H2] Each of a plurality of light sources is coupled to every one of a plurality of light-activated semiconductors by an optical coupling comprising bundles of optical fibres. The coupling is made by unsheathing the ends of the fibre optic bundles coupled to the semi-conductors and rubbing the fibres with a polythene rod to fan them out electrostatically. The fans are stacked on top of each other while the fibres are picked out with tweezers and hung over three U-shaped hooks. The fibres are then interwoven to avoid local bright spots and the whole crossover complex is potted in epoxy resin. Extra fibres may lead from the light sources to points where there functioning may be monitored. The invention may be used for controlling a plurality of strings of thyristors by coupling a plurality of light activated silicon controlled rectifiers to a plurality of GaAs lasers.
