Abstract
1,238,002. Coatings. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 2823/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Coatings comprise a thermally stable polymer obtained from an oligomal which is a reaction product of a poly-primary amine with a tetracarboxylic acid anhydride component consisting of I. 45-98.5 mole% of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and II an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride derivative in which one anhydride group is converted to a carboxylic acid, ester, thiol ester or amide group. Polyamines specified include: bis (4 aminophenyl) ether, bis (4-aminophenyl) sulphone, m-phenylene diamine, 3, 4'-diaminobenzanilide, 2, 5-bis (3'-aminophenyl)-1, 3, 4-oxadiazole, 5, 4'-diamino-2- phenylbenzimidazole, bis (4-aminophenyl) methane, 3, 4, 4'-triamino-diphenyl ether, bis (3, 4-diaminophenyl) ether, bis (3, 4-diaminophenyl) methane and 1, 2, 4-triamino benzene dihydrochloride. The tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride may be pyromellitic acid dianhydride, or benzophenone-3, 4, 3', 4-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. Component II may be prepared from the dianhydride and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethanol, isobutanol, 3-methoxybutanol, tertiary butanol, isopentanol, hexanol, N, N-dimethyl ethanolamine, 2- phenyl ethanol, diisopropylamine, dibutylamine, di (2-ethylhexyl) amine, piperidine, dichlorohexylamine, ethyl aniline, methyl thiol or butyl thiol. The aligmer may be applied in a solvent, e.g. DMA, DMF, diethyl formamide, THF, N-Methyl pyrrolidone, naphtha or DMSO, dried and heated to 200-500‹C to produce a polyimide or polyimidazolepyrolone. Substrates specified are glass, copper, steel, aluminium, asbestos, or ropes prepared from regenerated cellulose, wool, paper, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyester, polyamide, polyimide, polybenzimazole, polybenzimidazole, PTFE, or tetrachloroethylenehexafluoropropylene copolymer, or a chromium plate belt (Ex. 39).
