Abstract

123,791. Craven, A. B., and Yorkshire Dyeware & Chemical Co. Jan. 28,1918. Fatty acids, fatty oils, oxidizing. A linoleum cement is obtained by a process which primarily consists in oxidizing the fatty acids from drying and semi-drying oils, or the oils themselves (except tung oil, linseed oil, and soya oil), or the byproducts obtained in refining these oils, by means of gaseous oxygen or ozone until the requisite resilient, tacky, and adhesive product is obtained. The by-products employed are those resulting from the refining of oils by means of acid, alkali, or bichromate and acid, or by sedimentation, or the oily bodies recovered from fuller's earth. Mixtures of the raw materials may be used, the solidity of the product being adjusted by a suitable selection. Non-drying matters are removed from the raw materials when necessary by cold filtration or by distillation by the process described in Specification 121,777 which also effects a partial polymerization. A non-fluid product is also ensured by the addition of aluminium hydrate at a suitable stage, or by mixing resin or a gum resin with the products obtained by oxidation. The oxidation is conducted at 110‹ C. or more, and preferably in the presence of resinate, linoleate, hydrate, or other compound of lead, manganese, or cobalt, the operation normally taking from 14-25 hours. The treatment of linseed oil fatty acids, cottonseed oil foots, and a mixture of linseed oil fatty acids with cod oil are described. The raw materials may be preliminarily purified in the manner described in Specification 121,777.
