In apparatus for bringing hot gas into cocurrent contact with a melt or granular solid to be converted to a solid product by chemical reaction, the solid or melt is introduced at 3, and hot gas at 6. Cool gas is provided in the case of a solid at 4. The apparatus comprises rotatory mixing means.
