Abstract

1,237,581. Lubricants; fuels. MOBIL OIL CORP. 17 May, 1968, No. 23570/68. Headings C5F and C5G. [Also in Division C3] Metal complexes are formed between (a) an organic nitrogen compound having at least one basic nitrogen atom and (b) a salt of a metal of Group I B , II B , IV A , VI B or VIII of the Periodic Table (Lange's Handbook of Chemistry) with RSO 3 H, HR 2 PO 4 , H 2 RPO 4 , RPO(X)OH or HOSO 2 NH 2 where R is C 1-50 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl or an oxygen or sulphur derivative thereof and X is R, H or OH; a phosphosulphurized polyolefin; or the reaction product of an alkenyl succinic acid or anhydride containing 8-300 carbons and a polyamine. The products are added to gasoline, distillate fuel oils or lubricants which may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. esters, polyolefins, polyalkylene oxides, silicones, polyacetals or hydrocarbons. In examples products are added to mineral lubricating oil with zinc dihexylphosphorodithioate, overbased calcium sulphonate and barium salt of phosphosulphurized polypropylene. The preferred nitrogen compounds are alkylene polyamines and their reaction products, containing at least one basic nitrogen, with a carboxylic acid anhydride an aldehyde or an alkenyl (particularly polybutenyl) succinic acid or anhydride with or without an acid or aldehyde. In examples are reacted (a) polybutenyl succinic anhydride, tetraethylene pentamine and acetic anhydride with (b) zinc C 38-48 organic phosphate, zinc diamylphenyl phosphate or a zinc salt formed from the succinimide of (a); (a) polybutenyl succinic anhydride, tetraethylene pentamine and butyraldehyde with (b) zinc diphenyl phosphinate, zinc p-toluene sulphonate, zinc sulphamate, zinc methane sulphonate, zinc methylphenyl phosphate or zinc wax benzene sulphonate; (a) tetraethylene pentamine, formic acid and maleic anhydride with (b) zincphosphosulphurized polypropylene; (a) tetraethylene pentamine and butyraldehyde with (b) zinc-phosphosulphurized polypropylene; (a) polyethyleneimine (M.W. 50,000-100,000) and (b) zinc-hydrolysed phosphosulphurized polypropylene and (a) tetraethylene pentamine with (b) zinc alkylbenzene sulphonate then reacted with polybutenyl succinic anhydride.
