Abstract

1,237,143. Electro-plating apparatus. BURROUGHS CORP. June 4, 1968, No. 26411/68. Heading C7B. A metallic film of uniform thickness and magnetic properties is electro-plated on each side of a disc 36 by mounting the disc within an opening 42 in a plateable holder 34, mounting the holder in an electrolyte solution containing metal ions and generating a uniform electric field normal to the flat surfaces formed by the disc and holder. As shown, a polyester reinforced fibre glass tank 10 has mounted therein anode assemblies 76, 106, porous diaphragms 68, 70 and the holder 34 and disc 36. The disc itself has a central opening 54 which is closed by a plug 56. Electrolyte flows upwardly from an inlet 136 and between the disc 36 and diaphragms 68, 70. Some passes through and some flows over the top of the diaphragms to contact the anode assemblies 76, 106. Electrolyte leaves the anode chambers through ports 24, 26. The holder 34 and disc 36 serve as a cathode. The anode assemblies 76, 106 are adjustably mounted on the tank side walls by screws 82, 111 (and 84, 112), Fig. 2 (not shown) passing through slots in metal cross-bar members 78, 108. The positions of the anode assemblies are adjusted until the current density on opposing plateable surfaces of the disc is everywhere equal. This is recorded by a zero reading on a voltmeter (166) Fig. 5 (not shown). A brass disc 36 may be coated with Ni/Co using anode members composed of 80% Co and 20% Ni and an electrolyte at 45-65‹ C. comprising cobalt sulphate, nickel sulphate, nickel chloride sodium sulphate, boric acid and sulphuric acid to give a pH of between 3À5 and 5À0. The brass disc may have a copper plug 56 and be mounted in a copper holder 34 by copper ring members 48, 50.
