Abstract

1,236,977. Measuring visibility photo-electrically. ELTRO G.m.b.H. & CO., GESELLSCHAFT FUR STRAHLUNGSTECHNIK. July 18, 1968 [July 18, 1967], No.34251/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions H3-H5 A photo-electric measuring apparatus for determining the optical transmittivity of an extended optical medium e.g. cloud 6, Fig.1 comprises a pulsed laser 1 transmitting coherent light pulses to the medium, a receiver 2, receiving, coaxially with the transmitted pulses, the reflections from the extended medium and comprising a photo-multiplier 12, and a circuit, Fig.5, for processing the echo signal PE Fig.4, from one pulse, signal PE showing discontinuities at times t 1 and t 2 indicating reflections at the boundaries of area of the medium having different optical characteristics. The received echo signal amplitude PE is given by:- where:- P s = transmitted pulse amplitude #v= volume element of medium reflecting echo signal (dependent on transmitted pulse width and beam width) X =ct = distance to volume element #v. # (x) = remitting co-efficient of medium # (x) = extinction co-efficient For an area having constant values of #(x) and #(x) PE.t<SP>2</SP> is exponential e.g. Fig.3 and:- In the processing circuit, a differentiator/computer amplifier 21 determines dPE/dt and detects any discontinuities in the echo signal from amplifier 20. A logarithmic amplifier 22 determines Log |PE/P s t<SP>2</SP>| if means 21 detects no discontinuities. A differentiator 25 then produces the value of #(x). A computer 26 determines the visibility of the medium from the equation: and passes it to the recorder or display 28. If means 21 detects discontinuities a counter 23 is activated to determine times t 1 , t 2 &c. A logarithmic amplifier 24, similar to 22 processes the echo signal PE but is gated off during the discontinuities by the counter output. Successive values of [C-D#(x).t] are thus produced by amplifier 24 and the value of (X) for each area is detected by differentiator 27 and displayed or recorded at 28. Where the discontinuities are due to a cloud, a cloud thickness indicator 29 is provided fed by counter 23.
