Abstract

1,236,829. Phase comparators. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 46257/68. Heading H3A. A phase comparator comprises: four fourport quarter-wave directional couplers 1C, 2C, 3C, 4C connected in a ring, one of the connections including a 90 degrees phase shift QL; means for applying one input signal A to coupler 1C; means for applying the other input B to coupler 3C; means 3D for rectifying the vector sum of the two signals appearing at one port of coupler 4C to produce a "non-ambiguous" output; means 1D, 2D for rectifying the vector sums of the two signals appearing at ports 2C 2 , 2C 3 of coupler 2C respectively; and means S for adding the outputs from rectifiers 1D, 2D to produce an "ambiguous" output. The "non- ambiguous" output is zero when the two input signals are in phase and is maximum when there is 180 degrees phase difference, the sign of the output being the same whatever the sign of the phase difference, Fig. 6 (not shown). The ambiguous output has a polarity dependent on that of the phase difference, and is zero at both 0 and 180 degrees phase difference, Fig. 4 (not shown).
