Abstract
1,235,857. Hall effect reading heads. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 24 June, 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 45293/67. Heading G5R. A Hall effect reading head comprises two Hall generator units connected so as to provide an output which is a function of the difference between the magnetic fields detected by the units individually. Such a head may be used to read a record of alternating polarities or areas of high and low intensity, such as on the rotor of a magnetic encoder, so as to eliminate the effects of spurious magnetic fields. The head consists of two sub heads H1, H2 each comprising two Hall units A, B spaced so as to overlie similar magnetic areas on a tape R such that their individual outputs are additive, but the sub heads H1, H2 themselves overlie dissimilar areas. The units are driven by A.C. or D.C. power and are either connected as shown or back-to-back (Figs. 2-4, not shown) with the units oppositely poled. The output at terminals a, c is fed to a differential amplifier. The head assembly is manufactured by conventional deposition of semi-conductor, insulation and contact metal films on a substrate in that or the reverse order.
