A blind riveting tool comprises a closed ended sleeve 52 arranged to advance by means of a piston-rod 40 into a reservoir chamber 24 containing hydraulic fluid to cause fluid under pressure to flow into a cylinder 110 to actuate a piston 112 whereby a pull is imparted to the mandrel, the sudden release of pressure when the mandrel breaks resulting in advance of the sleeve 52 relative to the rod 40. The piston 112 carrying sealing rings 114, 118, is mounted for transverse movement on a piston-rod 120 and bears against a flange 124 thereof by a spring clip 128 engaging a washer. In operation, a plunger 84 is depressed by a trigger 94 to open a valve 68 by dislodging a ball 76 from a seating ring 78. Compressed air from a hose fixed to a tubular coupling 74 is thereby passed through an insert 70, port 66 and into a chamber 22 to raise a piston 34 carrying the rod 40 and sleeve 52. Hydraulic fluid is forced from the reservoir 24 through a port 170 to move the piston 112 rearwardly together with its piston-rod 120 and attached jaw housing 154 causing jaws 160 to be cammed forwardly to grip and then pull the mandrel until it breaks. When the mandrel breaks, the sleeve 52 is advanced relative to the piston-rod 40 to avoid drag on and the transmission of shock to the piston 34. When the trigger 94 is released, the valve 68 is closed and the fluid in front of the piston 112 is forced back into the reservoir 24 to cause the sleeve 52 to retract which in turn retracts the piston 34, the air being exhausted to atmosphere through the top of the insert 70. The piston 112 is returned to its initial position by springs 178, 180.
