Abstract

1,235,757. Matrix display devices. BURROUGHS CORP. 13 Sept., 1968 [18 Sept., 1967], No. 43740/68. Heading G5C. [Also in Division H3] A display device comprises an array 20 of cells 30 each containing an ionizable gas and carrying two external electrodes, means 110, 120 coupled to said electrodes for applying energizing signals to the cells to fire them and a circuit coupled to the cells for applying spaced apart positive and negative sustaining pulses including means for generating positive and negative pulses separately and at selectively controllable intervals. The pulses are formed by two NPN transistors 130, 140 coupled to transformers 170, 240 to which square wave pulses are applied from sources 150, 220. The transistors form part of a resonant circuit including capacitors 280, 310 and inductance 270. A positive pulse from source 150 turns on transistor 130 and generates a sinusoidal pulse. At maximum negative potential the circuit is broken by a diode 200 and the potential across the elements 30 remains constant until a negative pulse from input 220 causes transistor 140 to generate a similar sinusoidal pulse which is cut off by diode 260 and the potential retained until transistor 130 is again actuated. Circuit 190 provides power to compensate for energy lost during switching and circuit 300 energizes all the cells for short periods at low frequency to maintain some charge thereon and assist in firing.
