Abstract

1,235,366. Alkali metal perborates. SANDOZ Ltd. 15 Nov., 1968 [23 July, 1968], No. 54369/68. Heading C1A. Alkali metal perborates are produced by oxidizing an organic compound, which contains at least two hydrogen atoms oxidizable with the formation of hydrogen peroxide, in an organic solvent and reacting the oxidation mixture so obtained subsequently or simultaneously with a solid alkali metal borate and/or perborate in the presence of water, less than 0À6 mole of alkali metal borate being used per mole of the active oxygen initially present or theoretically obtainable by oxidation. Suitable organic compounds specified are hydrazo compounds e.g. hydrazobenzene, aminophenols, hydroquinones e.g. 2 - alkylanthrahydroquinone, secondary alcoholes e.g. isopropanol or cyclohexanol. Suitable solvents include alcohols, ethers, esters and ketones, or mixtures of these and hydrocarbons. The preferred starting material is an alkali metal metaborate e.g. sodium metaborate, disodium tetraborate, or a mixture of sodium metaborate and sodium perborate containing less active oxygen than the intended product. The preferred reaction temperature range is 10-60‹ C. and the process may be carried out on the countercurrent principle. The alkali metal perborates may be used as a detergent or bleaching agent.
