Abstract

[Also in Division E1] An airport comprises two runways, a taxiway joining ends of said runways, and air terminal facilities accessible by an aircraft from said taxiway but offset laterally from said taxiway to one side thereof and out of alignment with said runways. The runways, 1 Fig. 1, may be in tandem with the taxiway 2 joining adjacent ends of the runways, or, if the terrain requires it, the runways may not be colinear, for example Fig. 6 where a serpentine configuration is used. An additional runway or runways may be used, Fig. 3 (not shown), parallel to and connected to the taxiway end of one of the said runways. The taxiway and runways may be supported over water, by columns or otherwise, or floated on water, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown). Provision may be made for passage of vehicles beneath the airport in a direction generally parallel to the runways and taxiway. The airport terminal consists of a plurality of buildings, 4A, arranged in a row having its length generally parallel to the taxiway; a building having a recess opening towards the taxiway, towards which building an aircraft may be moved sideways to place a wing of the aircraft within said recess, Fig. 13. The building may have a passenger station above the wing receiving recess and elevationally adjustable means for transferring passengers from the station to the aircraft whose wing is in said recess, said means comprising an aisleway 20 extending generally parallel to a side of the building and means for supporting the aisleway for elevational movement, or comprising otherwise; a recessed building as in Fig. 13, having elevator means either raisable beside an aircraft for loading purposes, 24A, or raisable beneath or into an aircraft, 24D. Means may be provided for moving an aircraft sideways toward or away from an air terminal building, which means may include an aircraft supporting platform or a plurality of independently movable platforms.
