Abstract

1,235,150. Contacting gas with liquid or slurry. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 29 July, 1968, No. 36075/68. Headings B1F and B1R. A process for contacting a liquid or a liquid/solid slurry and gas comprises passing the gas upwardly through a contacting zone containing (a) a heterogeneous system comprising a continuous phase of said liquid or slurry and a discontinuous phase of said gas and (b) contactors having densities in the range from 50% to 120% of the density of said liquid or slurry to allow said contactors to move about freely in said contacting zone. The contactors may be Raschig rings, Berl saddles or spheres, and be made of polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, or blown aluminium. The process may be chemical, e.g. the catalytic polymerization of olefins, or physical e.g. absorption-desorption processes.
