Abstract

1,235,029. Stannous salts of polyphosphonic acids. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 24 June, 1969 [25 June, 1968], No. 31841/69. Addition to 1,160,640. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises stannous salts of polyphosphonic acids of the formulµ where R 1 is H or CH 2 OH, R 2 is H or CH 2 OH, n is 2-10, R 3 is phenylethenyl, amino, substituted amino, -CH 2 PO 3 H 2 , -H(PO 3 H 2 ) (OH), -CH 2 CH(PO 3 H 2 ) 2 , -CH 2 CH 2 PO 3 H 2 , cycloalkyl, C 13-20 alkyl or C 2-20 alkenyl, and R 4 is hydrogen, amino, hydroxyl, -CH 2 PO 3 H 2 , aryl, benzyl, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, methoxyalkyl, or carboxyalkyl containing up to 12 carbon atoms. Propane-1,2,3-triphosphonic acid and butane- 1,2,3,4-tetraphosphonic acid are prepared by reacting a suitable propargyl or butyne compound with a hydrogen dialkyl phosphite and an alkali metal promoter. Other compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula R<SP>1</SP>-(C#C) m CH 2 X, where R<SP>1</SP> is H or CH 2 X, X is Halogen, hydroxy or o-tosyl and m is 2, 3 or 4, with a hydrogen dialkyl phosphite and an alkali metal promoter. The stannous salts may be prepared by reacting SnCl 2 with the polyphosphonic acids in aqueous solution. The salts are used in oral compositions.
