Abstract

1,234,934. Coating apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 30 Sept., 1968 [1 July, 1967], No. 30445/67. Heading B2L. Coating apparatus comprises a pair of power-driven opposed upper and lower rollers, the lower roller being mounted for movement of its axis away from the axis of the upper roller while remaining parallel thereto. The apparatus is adapted to apply a band of adhesive peripherally to the upper surface of a footwear sole and heel unit prior to the attachment of the latter to a welted upper and comprises upper feed roller 23 rigid with a shaft 13 journalled in a fixed bracket 14, and a co-operating lower feed roller 29 of greater diameter and rigid with a shaft 31 journalled in a bracket 33 pivoted at 47 and 49 to the adjacent ends of parallel links 39 and 41, the opposite ends of which are pivoted at 43 and 45 respectively to the machine frame, whereby shaft 31 may move apart from shaft 13 while remaining parallel thereto for accommodating the step between the sole and heel. Shaft 31 is connected by a pair of universal couplings 35 and 37 to a gear 25 journalled on a shaft 3, the couplings being interconnected by a telescopic shaft 73. Gear 25 makes with a gear 27 which is rigid with shaft 13 and carries dog-clutch elements 19 normally engaged with similar elements 15 carried by a gear 11 journalled on shaft 13 and biased towards gear 27 by a spring 17. Gear 11 meshes with a gear 9 rigid with a motor-driven shaft 3. A circumferential groove 105, formed in the hub of groove 11, is engaged by a roller 103 carried at one end of a lever 99 which is pivoted intermediately at 101 to a fixed bracket and is pivoted at its other end to one end of a link 97. The other end of the latter is formed with a slot 95 engaged with an eccentric pin 93 turnable with a lever 89 for separating the clutch elements 15 and 19. A link 51 is pivoted at its upper end to bracket 33 and at its lower end to one end of a lever 55 pivoted intermediately to a fixed bracket 59. The other end of lever 55 carries a pin 61 disposed in parallel slots 62 formed at the upper ends of a pair of parallel bars 63, the lower ends of which are pivoted at 67 to a treadle 65. A tension spring 69, anchored at its respective ends to pin 61 and to a pin 70 selectively engagable with notches 71 formed in the bars 63, normally engages pin 61 with the bottom ends of slots 62. Treadle 65 is spring-biased upwardly for maintaining bracket 33 in a normally lowered position, whereby depression of treadle 65 serves to raise roller 29 into co-operating relationship with roller 23. Roller 29 is able to adjust automatically to the thickness of the workpiece by movement of pin 61 in the slots 62. Roller 23 is made from steel and roller 29 is made from synthetic rubber. The edge of the workpiece engages a pair of guide rollers 77 carried at one end of an arm 79 which is pivoted at its other end at 81 to the machine frame and rests intermediately on an adjusting screw 83 carried by a fixed bracket 85. An arm 87, rigid with bracket 33, is adapted to engage and raise arm 79 to prevent roller 29 from fouling the rollers 77 when an unusually thin portion of the workpiece is being fed. Holt melt adhesive is applied to the workpiece by a fixed nozzle 75 positioned adjacent roller 23. Nozzle 75 comprises a body 109 carrying a pin 111 disposed in an arcuate slot 113 formed in a member 107 rockably mounted on body 109. Adhesive flows through a passage 115 in body 109 into a chamber 117 in member 107 for distribution through outlet orifices 119 formed in member 107, the latter rocking to accommodate to the changing configuration of the surface of the workpiece.
