Abstract
1,234,679. Welding by fusion; removing metal by fusion. ELEKTRO-THERMIT G.m.b.H. 26 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 14220/69. Headings B3R and B3V. To remove, or minimize the formation of, riffles (periodically recurrent undulations due to wear) on a bearing and/or guide surface of a railway or tram track rail, all or part of said surface is melted, e.g. by non-consumable or consumable electrode arc welding, and then allowed to cool and solidify. When using a non- consumable (e.g. argon-shielded tungsten) electrode, the surface composition remains the same. When using a consumable (e.g. gasshielded or submerged-arc wire) electrode the surface composition may be altered so as to minimize the formation of further riffles. Any projecting surplus material supplied by the electrode may be removed, e.g. by grinding. A consumable electrode is suitably of low-melting or unalloyed material, e.g. by weight 0À12% C, 0À2% Si, 0À5% Mn, balance Fe and impurities. The rail may be processed disassembled or laid as track. Melting equipment may be moved along the track manually or by motor. A narrow melting zone and a single bead is usually adequate. The zone may be straight or zigzagged or sinusoidal.
