A paper machine press comprises a first press roll positioned within an endless felt, a second press roll positioned outside the felt and forming a first nip with the first press roll, means positioned within the felt having a curved surface with a radius of curvature substantially smaller than the radius of curvature of the first and second press rolls, the curved surface being movable between a position forming a second nip with the second roll, and a position spaced from the second press roll, and means for driving at least one of the first and second press rolls. The first press roll may be a suction roll, and the means positioned inside the felt may be a third press roll. This third press roll may comprise a rubber-covered metal roll. This roll may be supported by a plurality of rollers arranged in two rows to form a cradle for it, the rollers being supported on brackets which may be moved by fluid pressure means to provide a controlled uniform pressure at the second nip. The second press roll may be supported by two arms, and these may be pivoted by hydraulic cylinders to move the second press roll. The third press roll and its supporting cradle may be connected to these arms. The first and third press rolls may be positioned below the axis of the second roll, and on opposite sides of a vertical plane extending through the axis of the second press roll. The second press roll may be provided with a doctor for removing brake, means being provided to remove the blade from contact with the roll. A saveall pan may be provided about the lower portion of the first press roll.
