Abstract

1,234,095. Photo-electric thread supervision. W. REINERS. July 29, 1968 [July 27, 1967], No.35997/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H3] The invention relates to a device for switching off a textile machine in the absence of a thread (e.g. due to breakage, the end of a spool or cutting of the thread), in which the movement of the thread produces an alternating voltage which is amplified, rectified and then used to charge a capacitor which controls the machine switch. According to the invention operation is speeded by emphasizing the higher frequencies, by limiting the alternating signal amplitude and by using a rectifier of the full wave type. As shown, the photoelectric cell 1 receives light from a path including a very short length of its thread so that the relatively high frequency voltages due to vibration and projecting fibres are produced. These are passed through an amplifier which emphasizes the high frequencies to a full wave rectifier 21, a storage capacitor 22 and a switch controlling transistor 24. The capacitor prevents short spurious pulses from operating the switch. Its discharge time may however be short; firstly because the full wave rectifier provides a restoring charge at each half cycle, secondly because the amplifier selects the higher frequency components of the alternating wave and thirdly because the amplifier is designed to limit the alternating signal amplitude to a low level so that even on a strong signal the charge on the capacitor is not large. The frequency selection is effected by a circuit 14, 15, 6 which provides negative feedback at lower frequencies and positive feedback at higher frequencies. Diodes 26 provide for control of the switch-off of the machine by other circuits. The photo-electric detector 1 may be replaced by one of the capacitive or mechanically vibrating type and thread guides are placed close to each side of the detector to confine thread vibrations to the higher frequencies.
