Abstract

123,396. Osborne, W. H., and Jones, A. T. Feb. 21, 1918. Forks; spring devices.-The side element of a spring fork for motor-cycles &c. is made from a tubular blank by bringing opposite parts of the wall of the tube into contact with each other to form a web c of double thickness connecting tubular portions a, b which are formed from the remaining part of the blank and constitute the main and supplementary stays of the fork side. Lugs d, e to accommodate the front spindle of the upper links and the wheel axle may be fitted into the upper and lower ends of the member, and at an intermediate position a transverse barrel j may be provided for the front spindle of the lower links. The barrel may comprise a tube which at each end is flanged, and after being passed through a hole in the web is adapted to receive a flanged ring in such a way that the web is clamped between inner and outer flanges; or the barrel may comprise a tube j projecting through the web and having a flange disposed upon the inner side thereof, a nut k being screwed upon the projecting part of the tube to clamp the web between the nut and the flange. The two side elements of the fork may be made integral with each other at the top by bending a single length of the dual tubing into a narrow inverted U shape, the transverse part being flattened to form a plain web connecting the two fork sides. According to the Provisional Specification, mandrels may be incorporated in the tubular member to form or shape the tubular portions after the web has been formed by drawing, pressing, or rolling.
