1,233,919. Isopropenylphenylisocyanates; 3,5- diisopropyl - 4 - aminophenyl - dimethyl carbinol. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 15 Aug., 1968 [17 Aug., 1967], No. 39083/68. Heading C2C. The invention comprises 3 - isopropenylphenyl - isocyanate, mixtures thereof with 4- isopropenyl - phenyl - isocyanate, alkyl derivatives of 3- and 4-isopropenyl phenyl isocyanate having one or more alkyl groups on the benzene nucleus and mixtures of the alkyl derivatives with 3 - isopropenyl - phenyl - isocyanate. They may be prepared by reacting 3- or 4-aminophenyl dimethyl carbinols, alkyl derivatives thereof having one or more alkyl groups on the benzene nucleus, or mixtures thereof, with phosgene in an inert solvent at a temperature of 75-200‹ C. the quantity of phosgene present being always at least stoichiometrioally equivalent to the amount of amino carbinol present in the reaction mixture. One of the starting materials, namely 3,5 - diisopropyl - 4 - aminophenyl dimethyl carbinol is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding 4 - nitro compound at 0-150‹ C., 1-100 atmospheres and a pH of 4-12.
