In a stored-programme electronic digital computer arranged to execute a plurality of programmes concurrently, the temporary registers in which data used and generated during the execution of the programmes is held are comprised only of storage locations in main store, a set of such locations being allotted to each programme and being accessed by combining the contents of an address register with a number forming part of an instruction of a programme, whereby the dumping of temporary registers upon interruption of a programme is obviated. A bit in the instruction permits zero to be used in place of the address register contents so that a set of temporary registers can be shared between different programmes (or programme segments). The address register contents can be changed by a so-called SKIP instruction which may also contain the start address of a new programme. The SKIP instruction may be used only when an interrupt occurs or when a new programme (or programme segment) is entered. Selective address indexing is also provided.
