Abstract

Apparatus for therapeutic care of the legs, (a preferred form of which is illustrated in Fig. 1) comprises compression boots (1, 2) having an inflatable double wall, the inner wall of the boots having a non-uniform thickness, which thickness is greater in the proximal part than in the distal part of the boots, the boots being supported on a variable inclination pneumatic support in such a manner that the level of the distal part of the boots can be altered in relation to the level of the proximal part; and means for controlling the inflation of the boots and of the support. In the preferred form, the boots are employed with a special chair (5) provided with a control box (6) carrying control buttons (7, 8), by means of which inflation and deflation of the boots and support can be independently controlled through electrically and valve-controlled pump circuits. The pneumatic support for the boots preferably consists of a pneumatic cushion (3) positioned on a support (4), the cushion suitably comprising a plurality of chambers (31-33) connected by valves (V 2 , V 3 ) as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 shows the cushion in completely deflated position while Fig. 3 shows it completely inflated. The apparatus is used to improve venous flow in the legs and the pressure created by the inflated boots on the legs is greater in the distal part than in the proximal because of the prescribed variation in wall thickness of the boots; this avoids obstructing the blood flow in the veins at thigh level.
