Abstract
1,232,923. Casting propellant charges IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES. (KYNOCH) Ltd. 4 March, 1970 [3 April, 1969], No. 17482/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F3] A method of casting solid propellant charges for rocket motors, comprises locating in a mould cavity a plurality of quantities of casting powder 40, e.g. chopped nitrocellulose, separated by members 41 having holes 44, compressing the quantities 40 from at least one end of the mould by an air cylinder 19 acting through a perforated plate 23, displacing air from the powder by the passage of a casting liquid, e.g. desensitized nitroglycerine, from a connection 32 at one end of the mould, to an outlet 12 at the other end, curing the propellant charge formed from each quantity to a solid mass, the pressure in the cylinder 19 being maintained substantially constant, and removing the charges from the cavity. The mould is formed by a tubular member 2 split longitudinally into halves, and joined by bolts 4 engaging flanges 6. Each separator member 41 is formed from plastics and has a plastics membrane 45 adjacent the powder to enable the charges to be separated. A lining of combustion inhibiting material, e.g. cellulose acetate, is placed in the mould before the powder. An inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, is supplied to a chamber 24 from an inlet 36 to force the casting liquid through the powder. In Figs. 2, 2A (not shown), a core pin (60) is placed in the mould to form tubular charges. The mould can be a complete tubular member. The adjacent charges can be of differing materials. The casting liquid can flow from the connection 12 to the connection 32. The end of the charges can be castellated. The core pin may have an oval or star-shaped cross-section.
