Abstract

1,230,110. Curable polymercaptan-containing polymer composition. THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP. 6 Aug., 1968 [22 Aug., 1967], No. 37498/68. Heading C3R. A curable composition comprises in the proportions expressed in parts by weight: (a) polymercaptan-containing polymer, 100; (b) ZnO or ZnO 2 , 3-35; (c) elemental S, 0À05-5; and (d) a base-loaded molecular sieve. The composition may contain 20-60 wt. per cent of (a). (d) may contain 0À5-10 parts of (j) an amine; and 0À5-20 parts of (e) a moisture-activated curing agent for (a); 10-200 parts (f) fillers, pigments, or reinforcing agents; 10-150 parts (g) plasticizer; and 0À1-10 parts (h) adhesive. Also present may be perfumes, U.V.-light stabilizers, thixotropic agents, or cure retarders. Polymer (a) may be liquid polythiopolymercaptan polymer, liquid polysulphide polymer having a plurality of -SSH groups; or liquid -SH terminated polyether, hydrocarbon polymer, butadiene / acrylonitrile copolymer, alkanepolythiol, aralkanepolythiol, or arenepolythiol polymer, polyurethane, or poly(alkylene sulphide) polymer; or other polythiol polymer. Exemplified is with 0.5% cross-linking and average M.W. 4000. Curing agent (e) may be CaO 2 , Li 2 O 2 , PbO 2 , MnO 2 , BaO 2 , Na 2 O 2 , antimony peroxide, sodium carbonate peroxide, sodium perborate or chromate salts. Amine (j) may be ethylenediamine, diethyltriamine, n-butylamine, triethanolamine or piperidine. (f) may be C-black, clay, slate flour, CaCO 3 , limestone, asbestine, Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZnS, SiO 2 , magnesium silicate, iron oxide, or rayon floe. Plasticizer (g) may be a chlorinated hydrocarbon, phthalate or polyalkylene glycol benzoate. Adhesive (h) may be an organosilane or phenolic or epoxy resin. The composition may be packed for storage as a one-part or twopart system. It may be used at ambient temperature.
