Heading B5B. A spinneret for multi-layer conjugate filaments comprises (i) means for supplying a plurality of spinning materials, (ii) a spinneret plate provided with at least one spinning orifice, and (iii) at least one layer-multiplying mixer for subjecting a plurality of the spinning materials to separation and joining out of phase (i.e. in different planes), the mixer being interposed between the supply means and the spinneret plate; the mixer comprises at least one distributing plate having formed therein reservoirs and connecting passages in which the streams of spinning materials are separated and joined out of phase at least twice. Typical flow schemes are shown in Figs. 16 and 17. Fig. 9 shows how joining and separation out of phase results in layer-multiplication. A large number of embodiments of the spinneret are described, of which Figs. 18 and 19 show a simple form. Two spinning materials in reservoirs R 11 and R 12 are joined in channels 13, pass together down ducts 14 and are separated in a direction perpendicular to the joining direction through channels 15 and 16 into reservoirs R 21 and R 22 , the process being repeated until the spinneret plate 100 is reached and multi-layer filaments are extruded from orifices 105. For ease of construction in the case of more complex spinnerets, the layer-multiplying mixer may be assembled from a stack of distributing plates D 10 , D 20 , D 30 &c. (see Fig. 28) each of which is substantially identical and has reservoirs, channels and ducts formed in it as shown, the reservoirs and channels being engraved on the surfaces of the plates, and the stack together with the spinneret plate may be enclosed in an outer casing. The spinneret may be of rectangular cross-section, as those above, or cylindrical with concentric annular reservoirs and radial channels (see Figs. 59 and 61). In other embodiments, the layer-multiplied materials are further bonded with at least one more stream of spinning material, which may be single-component, mixed, or layer-multiplied, just before the spinneret plate. Thus Fig. 77 shows a cylindrical spinneret in which layer-multiplying is performed around a central passage 300 which conveys a stream of material to be bonded in channels 103 with the layer-multiplied material before extrusion. Alternatively the layermultiplying mixer may be connected in series with at least one other mixer, which may be conventional or layer-multiplying.
