Abstract

1,229,584. Current collectors; gas cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [1 May, 1967], No. 20066/67. Heading B7L. An electric pick-up mechanism for an electrically powered rail vehicle, e.g. a gas-cushion supported vehicle powered by a linear induction motor, comprises a body of electrically conductive fluid 12, Fig. 1, supported in a chamber 2 of a structure 1 carried by the vehicle, which fluid is confined in contact with a conductor rail 14 by gas curtains 13 issuing from an outer annular chamber 7 surrounding the chamber 2. Fluid 12, e.g. mercury or water, is supplied to the chamber 2 by a pipe 4 and when the level reaches a terminal 5 current is supplied to a power line 6 in the vehicle. The pipe 4 is controlled by a valve (not shown) operated by level detecting means (not shown). In other embodiments a continuous circuit of liquid is maintained, with a portion of the circuit contacting the rail.
