Abstract

A mechanical grate for a solid fuel furnace comprises a plurality of longitudinally extending grate bars mounted for reciprocatory longitudinal displacement, said grate bars forming a first group 20a secured to a cross-bar 21 and a second group 20b free to move relative to the cross-bar 21, wherein the said grate bars of each group have a pair of opposite cam surfaces 26a, 27a and 26b, 27b respectively, provided to be engaged by cam flollowers 24a, 24b mounted on a rotatable driving shaft 22 for imparting reciprocable movement to the bars, each of the cam followers including a rotatably mounted wheel or roller 32a, 32b riding on the cam surfaces upon rotation of the driving shaft.
