Abstract

122,916. Hodges, G. Feb. 9, 1918. Planes, construction of; propelling.- With a view to increasing the lift of flying-machines, a subsidiary plane hinged at its front edge to the main plane is moved up and down so as to collapse and extend the chamber formed between the two planes, an inlet valve being provided in the upper plane and an outlet valve in the lower plane. Fig. 3 shows a main plane 1 having an upper plane 2 hinged at 3 and connected to the plane 1 at the side and rear edges 'by fabric 6, inlet and outlet valves 8, 9 being provided. The plane 2 is driven by crank and connecting-rod from the engine 10, Fig. 2, or from wind-driven propellers 10<A>, which may also be coupled to the engine by chain gear 27 and a clutch. Fig. 5 shows a crank mechanism of variable stroke, the crank 12 and connecting-rod 13 being arranged to drive the plane 2 through a slotted link 14 pivoted at 14<A> and a rod 17 connected to the plane and to a block 16 which may be slid along the link 14. In modifications, the moving plane 2 may be below the fixed plane, or a moving plane may be arranged between two fixed planes or a fixed plane between two movable ones. Aerostats.-An exhaust pipe 30, Fig. 2, from the engine may be arranged along the front edge of the plane with orifices opening upwards, so that the heated gases are drawn into the chamber formed between the plates 1, 2. This cham. ber between the planes may be partitioned.
