Abstract
1,228,519. Flame-retarded polymer compositions. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. '24 June, 1969 [1 July, 1968 (2)], No. 31935/69. Headings C3P and C3R. A flame-retardant composition for thermoplastic polymers comprises the combination of the following chlorine containing compounds wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> represent, when taken together, an oxygen atom, or, individually, a hydroxy radical, an alkoxy radical of 1-8 carbon atoms or a haloalkoxy radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, and a phosphonium halide of the following formula wherein R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> represent hydrogen, alkyl radicals of 1-8 carbon atoms, cyano-, hydroxy- or carboxy-substituted alkyl radicals of 1-4 carbon atoms, allyl radicals, aryl radicals of 6-10 carbon atoms, aralkyl radicals of 7-11 carbon atoms, halo or polyhalo - ar - substituted aralkyl radicals of 7-11 carbon atoms or carboalkoxyalkyl radicals of 3-6 carbon atoms, no more than one of R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> being hydrogen, and no more than three of R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> being aryl, and X represents chlorine or bromine; or wherein R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> represent alkyl radicals of 1-8 carbon atoms, cyano or hydroxy substituted alkyl radicals of 1-4 carbon atoms, allyl radicals, or aryl radicals of 6-10 carbon atoms, Y represents an alkylene radical of 2-10 carbon atoms or a xylylene radical of 8-12 carbon atoms, n is 1-3, and X and X 1 are chlorine or bromine. Each of the two components of the combination so incorporated into the polymeric material in concentrations ranging from 1.0% to 20% by weight, with preferred ratios for the two components of from 3: 1 to 1: 3. They may be added to the polymer as such or in combination, by blending, milling or extrusion, or by moulding the components and polymer simultaneously. Alternatively, they may be added during the monomer polymerization. Plasticizers, dyes, pigments, heat and light stabilizers, antioxidants, antistatic agents and photochromic materials may be included in the flame-retarded polymer compositions. Many polymeric materials are mentioned, of which the following feature in the examples: polypropylene, high density polyethylene, polystyrene, butadiene-styrene copolymer, ABS type resin, poly(methylmethacrylate), methylmethacrylate - styrene copolymer, methylmethacrylate - ethyl acrylate copolymer and nylon 66.
