In position signal generating apparatus, a rectangle is moved relative to a symmetrical trapezium and a signal is generated proportional to the overlapping areas of the rectangle and trapezium. The rectangle or the trapezium may be part of a grating carried by an object whose position is to be signalled relative to a head carrying the other shaped aperture, and the signal is derived by photo-cells spaced apart as described in Specification 1, 227, 941. The length of the parallel sides of the trapezium are preferably in the ratio of 1:3 and the longer of the parallel sides is equal to the width of the rectangle. The grating pitch is twice the width of the rectangle. The trapezium aperture may be shaped as a double trapezium formed by rotation of a trapezium about its longer side.
