Abstract

1,227,793. Electrolytic grinding. FORDATH Ltd. April 10, 1969 [April 11, 1968], No.17471/68. Heading C7B. [Also in Division C4] A conductive workpiece is electrolytically ground using a conductive grinding wheel of a carbon matrix containing abrasive particles, e.g. of SiC, metal (e.g. W) carbide or alumina. A dressing tool may be maintained in contact with the operative surface of the wheel by a servomechanism. The wheel may be made by coating, preferably separately, graphite and abrasive particles with a thermosetting e.g. phenolformaldehyde novolac resin, moulding to the required shape under heat and pressure e.g. at 140- 180‹C. and 1000-2000psi, and then carbonizing the resin e.g. at 770-850‹C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen. Subsequent to carbonizing, a hydrocarbon e.g. benzene may be cracked to deposit carbon in the matrix pores and form a carbon skeleton bonding together the graphite and abrasive particles. The wheel preferably includes an inner drive-shaft mounting portion not containing abrasive particles, and an outer operative portion containing the bonded mixture of graphite and abrasive particles, made simultaneously using a mould containing a partition. Specification 1,222,651 is referred to.
