Abstract

1,227,747. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. ROTAX Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967], No. 38337/67. Heading H2A. In a dynamo-electric machine comprising a rotor having a plurality of circumferentially spaced polepieces each carrying a winding, the windings being held in position by wedge pieces located in the interpolar spaces and extending the axial length of the poles, there is formed in each wedge piece a coolant passage communicating with a coolant chamber 17 formed in the shaft 16, the chamber being divided into two by a baffle 35 and the two parts of the chamber communicating with inlet and outlet ports, 36, 19 in the casing of the machine. In an arrangement wherein a P.M. generator 27 supplies an exciter 22, 23 which in turn feeds the main alternator, the rotor 26 of the latter is cooled by coolant flowing through hair-pin shaped pipes 33 cast into the wedge pieces. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each wedge piece is formed with an axial bore (51) and the bores of each pair of adjacent wedges are interconnected at one end of the rotor by a pipe (53), the other ends of the two bores being connected to different parts of the coolant chamber 17. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the wedge pieces are cut away at portions intermediate their ends to permit the coolant to contact the windings 25. Rectifiers 24 connected between the exciter 22, 23 and the alternator rotor windings 25 are mounted on a support located in the coolant chamber 17.
