Abstract
1,227,135. Coating compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 July, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18493/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A coating composition giving a non-glossy finish comprises an aqueous dispersion of a film-forming polymer and a stable emulsion therein of a volatile organic liquid in an. amount not more than 20% based on the dispersion, the liquid being less volatile than and incompatible with the continuous aqueous phase, boiling in the range 50-250‹C and a non-solvent for the polymer and present in a particle size not below-1:1 micron. Specified polymers are vinylidene chloride/alkyl acrylate, vinyl acetate polymers and copolymers, vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers and butadiene-styrene and/or methyl methacrylate copolymers. The. organic liquid is an aliphatic hydrocarbon chlorinated hydrocarbon or C 6 + alcohol. Emulsifiers, preferably anionic e.g. oleic acid, are present and optionally particulate materials such as silica. The compositions may be applied to paper, wood, metals, hardboard or glass.
