Abstract

1,227,124. Coated foams. SCOTT PAPER CO. 3 April, 1968, No. 16130/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A resilient, cellular, polyurethane composite structure comprises a resilient polyurethane foam having a cured polyurethane elastomer coating on its strand, membrane and nexus surfaces, said coating composition comprising a prepolymer which is the reaction product of one or more polyisocyanates with polyethers or polyesters, said prepolymer having an equivalent isocyanate to equivalent hydroxy ratio of 5:1-2:1, and the prepolymercoated foam having been treated with steam at a temperature from 80‹-150‹C., said resilient polyurethane composite structure being substantially open-celled and having compression deflection values of from 100-6000% in excess of the uncoated polyurethane foam. The preferred polyether is a polyalkylene ether glycol, e.g. polyethylene ether glycol, and the molecular weight may range up to 5000. The polyester may be obtained by reacting a glycol with a dicarboxylic acid, that resulting from the reaction of adipic acid with a mixture of ethylene and propylene glycols being preferred. The polyisocyanate may be aromatic, aliphatic, or cycloaliphatic, e.g. 2, 4-tolylene diisocyanate. The prepolymer coating composition may include inorganic finely divided fillers such as barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, and phosphates.
