Abstract

1,226,956. Testing the weathering properties of materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 24, 1968 [April 25, 1967], No.19032/67. Heading G1S. A method of simulating and accelerating the effect of natural weather conditions on an article under test comprises exposing the article sequentially to (a) ultraviolet radiation of selected wavelengths, (b) a spray of water droplets and (c) heat, in the sequence (a), (b), (c) or the sequence (c), (a), (b). The article, such as a piece of plastics material or a surface coating is conveyed through the several stations, each simulating a particular weather condition, supported from an overhead rail. The ultraviolet light is supplied by suitably coated fluorescent lamps which move past the article. The water spray follows immediately or within two hours of the ultraviolet irradiation and is provided by one or more rotating brushes which fling droplets of distilled water from a trough on to the article. The article is then allowed to dry before being heated for a period not longer than ten hours at temperatures in the range 45-65‹ C. and preferably 50-55‹ C. for surface coatings. The heating is by convected air but white radiant heat may be used.
