Abstract
1,226,901. Measuring physical properties electrically. SEMPERIT OSTERREICHISCHAMERIKANISCHE GUMMIWERK A.G. April 2, 1969 [April 5, 1968], No.17146/69. Heading G1N. A device for measuring the visco-elastic properties of elastomers, comprises a movable electromagnetic coil, 1, supporting along its longitudinal axis a rigid rod 2 carrying discs, 3, locating rubber test specimens, 4, 50 that in use longitudinally-directed vibrations are impressed on the specimens by axial oscillations of the coil which is driven by an audio-generator 5 through a power amplifier, 6. The amplitude of the oscillations is measured by a differential transformer, 10, and the current through the coil which is proportional to the axial distorting force is measured and maintained constant while the frequency of the generator is calibrated using a timer 9. To each specimen is applied a pre-load by means of discs 16, threaded spindles 17 and hand wheels 18, which load is measured using a Piezo-electric load cell 13, amplifier 14 and digital voltmeter 15, while the static distortion is indicated by clock gauges, 19. The pre-load and distortion are greater than the alternating load and distortion so that the test specimens remain between the discs. An oscilloscope 20 utilizes a signal from a velocity pick-up 21 to enable the device to be set at its resonant frequency. Formulae are given in the Specification relating the dynamic modulus of elasticity E<SP>1</SP> and the dynamic loss modulus E<SP>11</SP> to the measured quantities. (For Figure see next page)
